1. Is there a sea-weed removal service?
There is no such thing as a "Sea-Weed" removal service. Sea Weed is a plant that is connected to rocks at the bottom of the ocean. When the tides comes in, sometimes the sea-weed gets lose and washes a shore with it. When the tide goes out the sea-weed stays on the beach and dries. Its all part of nature and there is no service that will come and remove it off of your beach. The inconvenience of kelp or seaweed in the water and/or on the beach is not an excuse for a refund.

2. The ocean water is gone, where did it go?
When you no longer see water, or see it in an distance, this is called "Low TIde" The Gravitational pull of the Moon is what causes tides. The Earth bulges slightly to and away from the Moon. As the Earth rotates daily, the bulges move across the Earth. Seeing how the Earth has more water than the land, it bulges slightly more, resulting in high tides. The Earth rotates 180 degrees in 12 hours during the day. The moon on the other hand, rotates 6 degrees around the earth in 12 hours. The twin bulges and the moon's rotation mean that any given coastal city experiences a high tide approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes. . (Low Tide and High Tide). When the water goes out (AKA "Low Tide") This is not an excuse for a refund.

3. What can you do about the smell at low tide?
There is nothing that can do about the smell of mud flats. This is part of nature and its not an excuse for a refund.

4. What if I see strangers on my beach?
In the unlikely event that there are strangers on the beach that bother you, you can politely ask them to leave. Let them know that you are renting the property and that you enjoy your privacy. Please note however, that any land beyond the High Tide mark on the beach is public property and you can not legally ask them to leave.
Even though it is not likely, you may also encounter "Clam Diggers" or "Wormers" You will know who they are because they will be bent over a hole that they just dug in the mud flats with a "hoe" in their hands. Please do not disturb them as they are people who are making a living by removing worms and clams from the mud flats. They then sell these items to local fish markets to sell to the public. They can only work during the "Low Tide." - You will most likely not encounter these workers unless you are near or "on" a public beach area.
Strangers on your beach is not an excuse for a refund. We can not guarentee complete privacy.

5. Who will remove the dead animal carcass off the beach?
In the possible event that a dead carcass washes up on shore, (seal, bird, fish etc…) please simply avoid it as much as possible and let Mother Nature do the rest. This is part of nature and is not an excuse for a refund .

6. When will the electricity come back on?
Power outages are rare during the summer, but they can happen. The best thing to do it wait for 1 hour. Normally power outages don't last any longer than that. If you don't have power back within one hour from it going out, then you should call Coastal Cottages to contact the local power company.
If you think you have blown a fuse (the power goes out shortly after you have plugged an electric cord into the wall) then call us immediately. Power Outages are out of our control and are not an excuse for a refund.

7. There is a bat in the house, what do I do?
It is a possibility, but unlikely, that you may encounter a bat in your house. Bats come out at night to eat insects (which insects are attracted to an outside light being on). At night, in the dark will be the time that you see a bat, if you do see one. Our best advice is take a broom and carefully "shoo" the bat out the opened front door. You don't have to hit the bat, just guide it to and out the door or window. If you don't feel comfortable doing this you can certainly call our office and a handy man will come to your cottage and remove the bat for you.
There is nothing that one can do to prevent a bat from entering a house. They are very flexible creatures and can squeeze through the smallest of holes/cracks. Once the bat has been removed you can leave an interior light on to keep the bat from returning as bats do not like light.

8. Why can't I have a bon fire outside?
Fires outside of the property are prohibited unless you are using a charcoal grill (contained fire) Any evidence of a fire will result in full forfeiture of your security deposit. Fires are prohibited due to the dryness of the surrounding grass, trees, plants etc...during the summer months. In order to have any type of "Uncontained" fire you need a special permit through the local fire department, without this permit you can receive large fines and even jail time should your fire become out of contol. Not being able to have an outside fire is not an excuse for a refund.

9. Why can't I use Coastal Cottage's emergency number for every day questions?
The emergency number is strickly for emergencies only. Using this number for general questions will not be tolerated for social "chat" or general questions, as someone could be trying to get through with a real emergency. If you have questions about your rental during hours that the office is closed you will not be re-imbursed with a rebate for the inconvenience of having to wait to have your questions answered.

10. The rain ruined my vacation. What will I be reimbursed?
During the summer months the weather is Maine is very beautiful and usually stays at a very comfortable temperature between high 70’s and low to mid 80’s. Even though most of the time the sun shines there is always a chance that it will rain. Because it rains doesn’t mean you are entitled to a refund because you think the rain ruined your vacation. Unfortunately we cannot predict nor guarantee the weather.

11. When I arrived at my house the cleaner left the broom out. I want a refund.
We are sorry for the inconvenience and the short time it would take to open the broom closet and place the broom inside, but this does not warrant any type of refund.

12. The cops were called on me. I want a refund.
The tenant who called us with this complaint was very serious about demanding a refund. He and his family thought that because there were no houses around them, that an outdoor party could be thrown. The cabin across the lake called the cops at 11:30pm when these tenants refused to turn down their music. Not only were the tenants loud and breaking the Maine Noise ordinance laws but had the nerve to demand a 50% refund for the embarassment of being caught. Did they get a refund? No.

13. Returning from kayaking there was no water to access land. I had to walk though mud. I want a refund.
Before you go canoeing or kayaking you MUST pay attention to the tides, espceially if you are renting a property that is on tidal water. If you are left stranded when the tide has gone out you will need to either wait another 10 hours or so for the tide to return to land or make your way back in by foot. Coastal Cottage Rental Company is not responsible, nor will refund anyone who gets "stuck in the mud."
